History & Background

Origin

Jeevoday is the fulfillment of a long-cherished dream; it is a collective movement and an enormous process through a non-profit, voluntary organization. Our mission is to provide significant growth for the welfare and rehabilitation of intellectually challenged youngsters to transform them into better citizens and productive members of our Society. Safeguarding this welfare is the mutual responsibility of a progressive and democratic society in which these children have a right to be an integral part. It was the great desire of the Late Archbishop Leobard D’souza- Archbishop of Nagpur, to start a school for Mentally Handicapped children in Nagpur. Accordingly, in 1988 we conducted a survey of Mentally Handicapped children. In a part of the city, we found more than 100 children between the age limit of 5 and 20. Having found this a pressing need of these children we started a school in an old structure in the S.F.S school premises on 2nd October 1989, being the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi the father of the Nation.

Jeevoday started its loving and dedicated service to intellectually challenged children with 17 children, and today rendering its service to more than 300 children and adults with intellectually challenged of various categories. The different categories include students with profound, severe, moderate, and mild retardation. Children with autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and multiple handicapped are also imparted education. They are accepted as day scholars. Currently, we have 200 students in Special Schools, and 100 adults getting training in the vocational rehabilitation center.
